Baker & Spice
Today I visited the Baker & Spice in Hillsdale on SW Capitol Hwy for their cinnamon roll! Well, cinnamon rolls. Unfortunately the only way you can buy their cinnamon rolls is to get a frozen, bake-at-home kit of seven! I really love this place, all of their pastries are fantastic and you have to take number when you walk in because they’re super busy from open to close! This is actually the second time I’ve tried to buy these cinnamon rolls… a few weeks ago I took home a frozen box and made them for my sister and a few friends. I have no idea what went wrong, but they were horrrrrible!!! They tasted like there was poison in them and we had to throw them away! I don’t know if they were frozen, then thawed and then re-frozen before I bought them, but we all almost died. And I just couldn’t believe the great Baker and Spice could have a bad tasting pastry, so I went back today and tried again. They were MUCH better this time, but, not my favorite. They rise for 12 hours before you bake them and were super puffy going into the oven. They came and I drizzled them with the vanilla glaze the provided. They’re pretty good! The dough is super soft and they’re all-around solid, however, they do have a “previously frozen” taste and I couldn’t help wishing that they just baked them for me and offered single cinnamon rolls at their shop. I would say this is a step up from the frozen rolls you buy at the store!
Favorite part: It was very nice to have these straight out of the oven! The house smelled fantastic.
Least favorite part: Would be better if they didn’t freeze them first!
