Helen Bernhard Bakery
Today I visited Helen Bernhard’s on NE 17th and Broadway for their cinnamon roll! When I arrived at about noon on a Thursday, the bakery was poppin’ off! There must have been about 30 people there picking up cakes, and when I squeezed up to the counter I was faced with a hard choice; frosting or no frosting, and with or without raisins! I opted for “the works”, as I love raisins in pastries (am I in the minority here??). When I dug into this roll I was pleasantly surprised. This is a darn good cinnamon roll! The brioche was quite good, and the cream-cheese-based frosting was delicious and not too sweet. My wife (who does not like raisins in pastries) took one bite and said “oh! this rivals Sweedeedee and P’s & Q’s! But maybe a bit too dry…”. Which was true, it was maybe a bit too bread-y and not very gooey.. but overall a solid choice!
Favorite part: All flavors mixed really well with the brioche
Least favorite part: I would have liked a bit more cinnamonny-gooeyness at the center.
